Crete is the largest island in Greece, and the fifth largest one in the Mediterranean. It offers the perfect holiday experience blending glorious sandy beaches, rich history and impressive landscapes.

Crete has a varied landscape of dramatic mountains, fertile valleys and steep gorges. There is a wealth of beautiful nature to explore, including the famous National Park of Chania.

Heraklion is the largest and most densely populated region on the island of Crete, nestling between two mountain ranges. The area is exceptionally picturesque, with vast valleys of olive groves and vineyard, charming villages and golden sandy beaches.

According to mythology, it was in a cave on Crete where the newborn Zeus was hidden and brought up by the nymphs. The son of Zeus, Minos ruled Crete and turned it into a mighty island empire. The city of Knossos is the legendary home of the terrifying Minotaur and the labyrinth which housed it until it was killed by Theseus.

The island was much prized for its strategic location, and was conquered by many civilisations including the Dorians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians and Ottomans, each leaving behind their legacy in historic sites and treasures for today’s visitor to discover.

There are regular ferry services between the port of Heraklion in Crete and the port of Piraeus (Athens), Mykonos, Santorini, Paros and Naxos, daily domestic flights to Athens and charter flights to the UK.
