Rhodes is one of the most fascinating of the Greek Islands. The capital of the Dodecanese, its walled medieval city is one of the best-preserved any- where in the world.

Due to its strategic location, Rhodes has been important since ancient times. Having been a centre of trade for the Roman and Byzantine Empires, in 1309 it was conquered by the Knights of Saint John, who built strong fortifications to protect it, many of which still remain today. It was subsequently captured by the Ottoman Turks, and later the Italians, before finally becoming part of Greece in 1948.

A stroll around the old town of Rhodes, is like taking a walk through history. The medieval fortifications, the narrow alleys, minarets, grand houses with their balconies, intricate fountains and majestic squares all contribute to the unique ambience. Don’t miss a visit to the cobblestone Street of the Knights, the 14th century Palace of the Grand Master or the Hospital of the Knights. Enjoying a coffee in one of the cafes within the old town, or a meal in a taverna is an ideal opportunity to soak up the ambience.

The beaches of Rhodes are famous, and it has more than 35 which have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flags. The geography of Rhodes

is diverse, so some are pebbles, others golden sand. Inland there is spectacular scenery to explore from verdant hills clad in pines and cypresses to caves, rivers and the beautiful ‘Butterfly Valley’.

One of the best known resort areas is Lindos, once an ancient city state. The remains of the acropolis are built high on a steep rock, 116 metres above sea level, with the picturesque traditional village below with its whitewashed houses and Byzantine churches. Hire a donkey from the village square for the steep climb up to the historic acropolis - well worth it for the stunning panoramic views from the top. Below is the popular beach of Lardos, with its clear waters and plenty of watersports on offer.

Connections      

There are regular ferry and/or catamaran services between Rhodes and the ports of Kos, Leros, Patmos, Santorini (on set days), and Marmaris (in Turkey), daily domestic flights to Athens and charter flights to the UK.
