This sheltered coastline of clear waters and attractive beaches, with a backdrop of the impressive Biokovo Mountain range, is a popular spot for relaxed beach holidays.
The Makarska Riviera is a hidden gem, popular with locals for its excellent climate, beautiful scenery and charming beaches. The town of Makarska is at the centre of the region and boasts a long sand and shingle beach and pine-fringed promenades. The town grew up around a natural harbour, protected by the peninsula of Sveti Petar, (Saint Peter). Once it harboured pirates; now it welcomes upmarket yachts.
Keen hikers will enjoy walking in the Biokovo Mountain range, the highest peak of which is the magnificent Sveti Jure (Saint George) at 1762 metres. For the less active, it is possible to drive to the peak to enjoy spectacular views from what is the highest peak on the Mediterranean. The mountain is protected as a National Park area.
Tucepi is a popular holiday spot with its 4km long pebble beach lined with shady pine trees. A seaside promenade extends along the beach and plenty of water sports are on offer - a popular diving school is situated here. It is a laid-back resort town offering a good choice of restaurants and bars. Over the summer there is a festival of entertainment and cultural performances which take place in the harbour and surrounding villages, including traditional klapa singing groups.
Meanwhile, just 45km away is Brela Beach, generally known to be Croatia’s best beach, 6km of coarse, pale sand, spread over pine-fringed bays stretching along the coast.
Ferries depart from the harbour for the port of Sumartin on the island of Brac, running several times a day in high season.
