The town of Makarska is at the centre of the region and boasts a long sand and shingle beach and pine-fringed promenades. The town grew up around a natural harbour, protected by the peninsula of Sveti Petar, (Saint Peter). Once it harboured pirates; now it welcomes upmarket yachts.

Keen hikers will enjoy walking in the Biokovo Mountain range, the highest peak of which is the magnificent Sveti Jure (Saint George) at 1762 metres. For the less active, it is possible to drive to the peak to enjoy spectacular views from what is the highest peak on the Mediterranean. The mountain is protected as a National Park area.
