Welcome to Mykonos
One of the best known of the Greek Islands, this whitewashed paradise is in the heart of the Cyclades. It is an enchanting mix of glamour blended with the traditional life of the islands.
According to mythology the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants which were slain by Hercules. Its steep mountains give way to low, rocky hills and superb sandy beaches. Elia is one of the best golden sandy bays - perfect for a laid-back beach holiday. The sandy beaches are lapped by the clearest azure waters.
The capital city, Hora, also known as Mykonos Town, has a charming, colourful harbour where small working fishing boats moor side by side with luxury yachts. Look out for the pelicans, adopted by the locals as the official mascot of Mykonos. Its marble streets spread out over a large, flat area, its whitewashed buildings, draped with bougainvillea with their brightly-coloured doors and window frames, interspersed with tiny but impressive churches, pretty tavernas and shops
postcard perfect! Make sure you visit Alefkantra or ‘Little Venice’, the most attractive of the districts where grand captains’ mansions perch above the sea with their colourful balconies. Known as the ‘island of the winds’, Mykonos is a paradise for water sport enthusiasts, attracting surfers and sailors from all over the world. It is also popular with keen divers, and offers many dive and water sport centres.
The delicious local cuisine is sure to be a highlight of your holiday -kopanisti, a soft cheese seasoned with pepper is a local delicacy, often served on a round rusk spread with grated tomato. There are also some tasty local sausages cooked with local sun-dried oregano and sprinkled with pepper. Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy the exceptional local pastries, amigdalota small round cakes made with ground almond, rosewater and sugar and honey pie.
There are regular ferry and/or catamaran services between Mykonos and the port of Piraeus (Athens), Heraklion (Crete), Santorini, Paros and Naxos, daily domestic flights to Athens and charter flights to the UK.
