M'Hamid
M'Hamid El Ghizlane, often referred to simply as M'Hamid, is a small oasis town located in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southeastern Morocco. Situated approximately 94 kilometers south of Zagora and about 24 kilometers from the Algerian border, it marks the end of National Route 9 and serves as one of the last settlements before the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert.
Geography and Climate
Nestled at an altitude of around 500 meters, M'Hamid lies along the mostly dry Wadi Draa riverbed. The town experiences a desert climate characterized by extremely high temperatures during summer months, often reaching up to 45°C (113°F), while winter temperatures can drop to around 0°C (32°F)
Historical Significance
Historically known as Taragalte, meaning "plain of gazelles," M'Hamid was a pivotal stop for trans-Saharan trade caravans. It served as a gathering point for traders embarking on journeys to destinations like Timbuktu. The town's rich history is reflected in its ancient ksars (fortified villages) and the remnants of Jewish kasbahs, which stand as testaments to its diverse cultural past.
Cultural Highlights
M'Hamid hosts the annual Taragalte Festival, a three-day open-air cultural event celebrating nomadic heritage through music, dance, poetry, and art. The festival also features traditional sports like camel racing and nomadic hockey, offering visitors an immersive experience into the local traditions.
Tourism and Activities
As a gateway to the Sahara, M'Hamid is a starting point for camel treks and 4x4 excursions into the desert, particularly to the impressive Erg Chigaga dunes, located about 60 kilometers away. These less-visited dunes offer a serene alternative to the more frequented Erg Chebbi near Merzouga.
Visitors can explore the town's ancient architecture, including the decaying ksars hidden within the palm oases. The weekly souk (market) held every Monday provides a glimpse into local life and commerce.
