Day 3: Naxian Cooking Experience :

Starting from your hotel we first head to the village of Eggares. Lying on a fertile plain traversed by two rivers, Eggares is the island’s main supplier of produce and a truly blessed place. Of course, agriculture in Greece is tied to the cultivation of olive trees and the production of olive oil and that is exactly what we are going to take a closer look at through a visit to the village’s olive press museum. This traditional olive press dates back to 1884, however some locals will claim it has been around since the beginning of the 19 th century. You will get to see the tools that were used at the time and learn about the process of manual olive oil extraction that has been in use for millennia, and now belongs to the past. Having learnt everything about olive oil it is now time to use it!

Situated on the same plain as Eggares is the nearby village of Galini (meaning  serenity) where we will set out on a gastronomic quest with the help of our host and teacher, Mrs Voula (a local woman who is happy to share her cooking knowledge).

The first step to making a great dish is picking out the ingredients and what ingredients would be better than the home-grown fruits, vegetables and herbs found in our host’s own authentic organic farm. You have the chance to see where organic products grow and have a real taste of cultivation and farming. Having assembled everything, we are going to create a traditional Naxian dish from scratch! Than enjoy the self-made organic delicious dishes!

Day 4:  At Leisure on Naxos

Another day exploring the narrow streets of Naxos or just relax at your leisure.

Day 5:   Apollo Tour

Then on to the village of Halki with its mansions, the Byzantine church of Panagia Protothroni and the citrus distillery. Next stop to the byzantine church of Panagia Drosiani, one of the oldest in the Balkans.  Next stop is Apiranthos village with its marble paved alleys and its unique atmosphere. Passing by the villages of Koronos, Skado and Mesi, we arrive at the northern village of the island, Apollonas, where there is an unfinished Kouros statue. Time for lunch (not included in the package) and/or swimming. We return to town by the northwestern costal road

Eggares - small farming village

Eggares (or Egares) is a small farming village in the midst of a fertile plain just a few kilometers north of Hora (Chora – Naxos town). Most of its 200 permanent residents are farmers. The Eggares plain, accounts for a sizeable part of Naxos’s agricultural production due to its plentiful waters.

This is a small village with some picturesque churches and two restored olive presses one of which was built in 1885; today it houses the municipal office and the village clinic. The second structure is said to be some decades older, although the olive press itself is dated 1884.

In the summer the population swells nearly five-fold as people who are connected to the village and tourists make their way to it. The centre of the village is its attractive, stone-built main square. The village’s main Church, that of Kimissis Theotokou (Dormition of the Virgin), is to one side of the square. A second church on the hill above the village has two facades balanced with two separate bell towers. A little lower, there is an almost cathedral like church with a red dome which contrasts starkly with the tiny Cycladic style church standing before it.

The Kouros of Apollonas

The Kouros of Apollonas, also called the Colossus of Dionysus, is a 10.7 metre tall unfinished statue of light grey Naxian marble with a weight of around 80 tonnes. It is located in an ancient quarry near Apollonas, a small town in the northern part of Naxos.

The village Apollonas, 48 km from Naxos city on the north coast of the island, is located at the site of an ancient settlement with a shrine for the god Apollon. A staircase leads to the ancient marble place where from about 600 BC the unfinished statue of a kouros has been laying. Only the contours are finished. The 10.5 m long and 30 tonnes heavy image suggests a bearded figure, maybe picturing the god Dionysus (because Apollon is almost never shown with a beard). After a sculptor found a structural mistake in the marble, making it unusable, they stopped working on it and left the statue behind unfinished. A similar and equally large-screen Apollon stood up to the Hall of the the people of Naxos on Delos.
