Kos is the third largest island of the Dodecanese archipelago and has an impressive history stretching back to Neolithic times. It is known as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine - you can still see the ancient plane tree, in the shade of which he used to teach. It is now more than 2500 years old and overshadows the whole square. After Hippocrates died, an Asclepion or infirmary was built here in the 4th century BC, which was once the most famous in the whole of Greece.
