Split

Split is a magnificent city, its old town spreading along the seafront, a living history lesson, with a unique atmosphere and an engaging energy. Combine a stay here with the islands of Hvar / Brac for a magnificent two or three centre holiday. Although Split is Croatia’s second largest town, the old centre has a delightfully relaxed, intimate feel. Its seafront cafes, spread along the palm-lined promenade, have a distinctly Mediterranean ambience. The old town feels like an open museum - the medieval buildings built into the structure of the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, so that corridors have become streets, and rooms are now entire houses.

Island of Vis

Vis is the furthest island from the coast of Crotia and the most enigmatic. It spent much of its recent history serving as military base for ex-Yugoslavia, it was close to foreign visitors from the 1950s right up until 1989. This isolation preserved the island from development and drove  a lot of people to move elsewhere in search of work, leaving it underpopulated for many years. In Vis town, parts of the ancient city walls remain, along with a thermae (public bath). Levaman Fortress houses the Archaeological Museum, with exhibits including a 4th-century-B.C. bronze head of the goddess Artemis and amphorae recovered offshore. On a small peninsula, St. Jerome’s Church and Monastery is built over an ancient Roman theater

Island of Brac

This beautiful island, known for its stunning white marble, is home to Croatia’s most famous and iconic beach, Zlatni Rat. Brac is the third-largest island in the Adriatic and the perfect place to get away from it all. Hiring a car or a bike means that you can discover plenty of deserted beaches and quiet coves. As you head into its interior, you will see that many of the inland villages have long been abandoned. It makes an interesting excursion to head inland to the Museum of Brac in Skrip, where you can find out more about the island’s fascinating history, and learn just how tough life was for islanders in times gone by.

The staff there are some of the best we have come across, and the breakfasts were great. We are looking ahead to 2023 and were wondering if you could arrange a quote for a similar trip."  Sue and Mike Fedeczko - 28 September 2022
